Four Winds of the Caddo

Four Winds of the Caddo - Score

The Caddo Nation of Native Americans originated in the lower Mississippi Valley around 700-800 A.D. and built an advanced culture that thrived in southwest Arkansas, northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma and northwest Louisiana. Their vast knowledge of the environment included attribution of important characteristics to each of the four prevailing winds. The East Wind brings “dawn and renewal”, the West Wind “precedes the sunset and provides transition to the spirit world”, the South Wind “warms with a sense of revival” and the North Wind warns of “harsh weather and challenges ahead”.

From the official Caddo Nation website (mycaddonation.com):

As Caddo people, we are the descendants of agriculturalists with an intimate understanding of the world, the stars, the sky, the earth and world below the earth, from which we emerged. Priests studied the night sky of stars and, from that, understood our place in the universe, the passage of time, when to plant and how to thrive. Our songs, our drum, our singers and our dances are synonymous with Caddo people and culture. When we emerged from within the earth according to our Origin story and traditions, it was with drumming and singing.
